How sandblasted and stained glass boxes are made
All glass used in creating these stunning etched and stained glass boxes is sandblasted by hand using masking material rendered by the artist.
The design is produced on my computer and then laser printed on a transparent material to make a photo positive sheet. This photo positive is then placed on a light sensitive film and then subjected to ultra violet light for a certain time period. The film is then washed, flushing out the un-exposed portion, and becomes a mask with the design left intact. This masking is applied to various types of glass and deeply sand carved in a pressure sandblaster. If it is a flat piece of glass, it is cut into the needed pieces, the perimeter of each piece foiled with strips of copper and the pieces soldered together with lead solder. Finally, the piece is finished with decorative lead solder sculpture and wire (if used in the design).
Various types of glass are used. Colored mirror, textured glass, flashed glass( 2 colors fused together), stained glass in many colors, bevels and glass 'jewels' are some of the materials used to make these unique items.
